Question 1

How is word count calculated?

Accepted Answer

Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace and punctuation boundaries. Most word counters split on spaces and newlines, so 'hello world' = 2 words. Hyphenated words (state-of-the-art) are often counted as one word. Our counter matches how Microsoft Word and Google Docs count words.

Question 2

How many words per minute is average reading speed?

Accepted Answer

The average adult reads 200–250 words per minute silently. Speed readers reach 400–700 wpm. Technical or complex content slows reading to 100–150 wpm. For a 1-minute read, aim for ~200 words; for a blog post (3-4 minutes), 600–800 words; for a long-form article (7-10 minutes), 1,400–2,000 words.
